HOT AIR BALLOONS
How do hot air balloons fly?
In a hot air balloon, a gas burner is used to heat air to a temperature of about 212 degrees Fahrenheit, or 100 degrees Celsius.
Since hot air is lighter and less dense than the cool air around the balloon, the heated air causes the whole balloon to rise. When the air inside the balloon cools down, or when the hot air is let out, the balloon goes down.

Has anyone ever flown around the world in a hot air balloon? When did it first happen?
In 1981, the first attempt to fly around the world occurred. Nine years later it become a race! (eballoon.org)
"On 20 March 1999, the "Breitling Orbiter 3" crossed the last meridian and landed in Mauritania, North Africa the following day, becoming the first hot air balloon to circumnavigate the earth. Both pilots had made history, covering a ground breaking distance of 42,810 kms. The greatest hot air balloon challenge in the world had been achieved!" (eballoon.org).
